There Are No Perfect Moments

Sometimes I just don’t feel like it.

Working out, plain old working, sometimes I’m just not feeling it. We’ve all been there, but the difference between people who Get Stuff Done and people who don’t has a lot to do with how they react to those “I don’t feel like it” moments. If I’m being honest, those moments are frequent. When it comes to making a big change, those moments seem to be everywhere!

Gearing up to leap from a job you hate is a daunting process, and it feels like there’s always a reason not to do it right now. You’re tired, you’re busy, you’ll feel more secure in your choice later, maybe after the summer holidays, maybe after the winter holidays, New Year’s fresh start… there are excuses available everywhere, and it’s easy to get caught in the cycle of waiting for the timing to be just right. How many times have you said, "I'll do it tomorrow"?

Well, I have some news. Things are never going to be just right. Nobody is ever really comfortably ready to take a big leap. So what the heck are we supposed to do?

Do it anyway.

You’re scared? That’s ok. Say hello to your fear, and do it anyway. You’re super busy at that job you hate? That’s ok. Be busy. Have a talk with yourself. Is “busy at that job you hate” how you want to be moving through the world this time next year? If the answer to that question is “no”, then you’re going to have to make some changes now. Do it anyway.

Change is hard, and humans are pretty hardwired for consistency, predictability, and safety. But you are braver and more resilient than you think! Your future is waiting for you to hop on, so don’t wait for some imaginary perfect circumstance to appear, just go get it.

Remember, nothing productive ever happens from inside your comfort zone.
